President's End of the Year Message

As president of the Columbus-Whitehall Club #3002, the one thing that stands out most is my personal growth. Don't judge me too fast; it has not been all about me. This article is about the change in perception. My outlook has transitioned from "what's in it for me me me" to "what's in it for us".

Bullseye When I joined Toastmasters, I set a definite goal to complete the first 10 exercises within one year. I was determined to improve myself and get as much as I could from the dues paid. I was committed and focused on learning and achieving from the Toastmasters experience. Within a year, I received recognition as a Competent Toastmaster at the International level!

It's human behavior to be self-focused. But, it didn't take long before I realized that none of my achievements could have been made without the help of other Toastmasters and specifically members in the Columbus-Whitehall Club. Every member that attended each club meeting had an impact on my success. And that success is carried beyond Toastmasters. I would especially like to thank my fellow officers, Charley Ashley, Charles Scott, Vanessa Sutton, Rebecca Hess, and Maria Scott for their support and a year of excellent service.

The Columbus-Whitehall Club had many accomplishments over the past year. A highlight has been working with Chuck Scott to charter a new club at his church, Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church. This activity helped to adjust my perception from "me" to "us". When Chuck Scott and Charley Ashley approached me about chartering a new club, the initial reaction was, I'm new in this office as president and don't understand all of my duties to 'our' club. Isn't this going to be a conflict? When will I have time to work on my own tracks? Luckily it didn't take long for me to get outside of my fear and modify my thinking. The focus shifted to helping others and I committed to assist. Within this fiscal year the Columbus-Whitehall Club became a proud sponsor of a newly chartered club called the Tri-Logrogan Community Toastmasters!

Boxing Gloves Helping others to grow in Toastmasters excelled my growth. As stated earlier, the benefits truly expand beyond me and my personal goals. For example, with the new Tri-Logrogan Club, members from both clubs have two resources or venues in which they can practice their Communication and Leadership skills. Twice the opportunity to excel, twice the support, and twice the benefit!

I want to acknowledge the best in every member of our club(s). Officiating as president for the Columbus-Whitehall Club #3002 for the 2005-2006 fiscal year has been enriching. Remember, as you continue to focus on personal goals or the "me me me", your commitment to Toastmasters for self-improvement helps others.

Speaking from experience,

Dana M. Rogers, President
Columbus-Whitehall Club #3002
July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006

The Star of the Show!

You are the Star of the Show, so help the Toastmaster of the Day introduce you with Hollywood Flair!

Actor First, you'll need to complete your Bio, resume, and vita on Turbobase. With this information, the Toastmaster has the centerpiece around which to serve up a good introduction.

One week before your speech, you should give the Toastmaster any personal information to be used in your introduction. This would include:

  • Title of your speech
  • Manual name and project number
  • Time limit of your speech
The title and objectives should be given to both the Toastmaster and your evaluator. For some of the advanced speeches, the Toastmaster may need to set the stage for your speech. For example, if the audience has to pretend to be a special group or at a special occasion, let the Toastmaster know. Sometimes you'll need to write it out.

A few pertinent facts can go a long way to enhance the wonderful preparation you've done to deliver a good speech. Break a leg!

On What Shall I Speak?

Speaker Many Toastmasters will say that one of the hardest things for them is, not delivering the speech, but finding a topic on which to speak.

Here are just a few ideas if you ever find yourself stuck in that situation:

  • Childhood experiences (friends, trips, perspective on adults)
  • Hobbies (fascinating facts, what excites you, your collection)
  • Causes that you support (how you got involved, what you do, how others can get involved)
  • Significant events in your life
  • Soapbox (something you passionately believe in)
  • An interesting book you've read
  • Characters you've met or would like to meet
  • Your first introduction to ... (your boss, your spouse, a PC, a new school, your cell phone. the city)
If you have other ideas for speeches, send them to the webmaster and they will be published. Our club members never stop supporting one other!

Christmas in June

Christmas in June? A gift for the Mayor? Yes, indeed, you heard it right here, ladies and gentlemen. Our club president, Dana Rogers, ATM-Bronze, presented a plaque to Mayor Lynn Ochsendorf and the Whitehall City Council for their outstanding support to our club over the past years.

The award idea was the brainchild of our club president. She presented the idea to the club executive committee, coordinated the award, and worked with the city to determine a good presentation day. After several date and time changes by the City, Christmas was on. Dana checked her list twice, for the naughty or nice, and called all of her busy helpers together for a special Christmas delivery! The Present was finally ready!!!

Charley Ashley, Elf-At-Large, warmed up the council meeting with a brief history of our club, our purpose, and what we have accomplished over the years. Dana then asked the Mayor to join her at the lectern and presented her with a plaque for outstanding club support!

Our presentation was covered by the Eastside Messenger Newspaper. The Messenger article dated June 26, stated the following:

"Another presentation was made to Mayor Lynn Ochsendorf and Council by the Whitehall Toastmasters. Charley Ashley, Vice President of Education for the group, said they just wanted to thank the city for all the years they have been allowed to meet at City Hall. He pointed out that Toastmasters meet the second and fourth Tuesdays, and have been doing so for almost 30 years. He said the city has always been supportive, and they wanted to show appreciation. 'Toastmasters is for those who desire self-improvement and overcoming the fear of public speaking,' concluded Ashley. Dana Rogers, President of Toastmasters then presented the plaque to Ochsendorf. Ochsendorf graciously accepted noting how hard it is for some people to speak publicly."

After the presentation, various members of the Council favorably discussed the Whitehall club.
