A Great Visit in Barbados

SunJet Club
Comedian Jeff Foxworthy might say, "If you select a vacation spot based on the availability of a Toastmasters Club, you're probably hooked on Toastmasters. So in August, my wife and I selected the beautiful island nation of Barbados for our vacation. Although we're hooked on Toastmasters, we didn't quite use that criteria for selecting Barbados.

This tropical paradise is just 220 miles from Venezuela. Palm trees, sandy beaches, and rum are among the main attractions. Friendly people were everywhere, as we arrived there during the last day of the "Crop Over" Festival.

Since it had been two weeks or more since my last speech, I was getting the "shakes" (withdrawal symptoms). Then I saw it there on the Toastmasters International website: the Sunjet Toastmasters Club meets every Thursday at 5:30 pm at a local Bridgetown, Barbados, college.

We called a taxi and with just a 10-minute ride through the narrow streets and roundabouts, we arrived at the meeting at 5:15 pm. At that time, all officers were in place and we were greeted warmly by our TM host, the Sergeant-At-Arms.

Gavel At exactly 5:30 pm, the gavel hit and the meeting started. President Phillip Jackman welcomed us and moved smartly into a 30-minute business meeting. All non-members were excused while they voted on an applicant who was applying to join the club. A brief character reference was given and the new Toastmaster was voted in.

At 25 minutes into the business session, the Sergeant-At-Arms notified the President that he had 5 minutes to wrap up the business session.

The next part of the meeting started with the Word of the Day and Table Topics. One Ice Breaker was very well presented and evaluated. Their theme seemed to be about "commitment". When asked to speak about his commitment, one Toastmaster, who arrived late, said that the fact that he'd walked several miles to get to the meeting speaks for itself.

This Club was committed and had plans of going to Toronto, Canada, for the International Conference later in August.

We enjoyed the differences that we saw in their procedures and we agreed that we will be better Toastmasters having met them all!

Giving Birth to Twins

The Columbus-Whitehall Toastmasters Club is giving birth! We are in the process of sponsoring two new clubs here in the Central Ohio area.

Club member Helen Carmen is working with the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Center to start a new Toastmasters Club at their facilities. Simultaneously, Club member Chuck Scott is starting up a new Toastmasters Club at the Triedstone Baptist Church. Both of the new clubs will be open clubs.

These provide plenty of good opportunities for Club 3002 members who need to mentor or (?) a new club. Please see Helen, Chuck, or Charley for more information on how you can help in the development of these new clubs.

Starting Off on the Right Foot

Footsteps Columbus-Whitehall Toastmasters Club has gotten accustomed to making the Distinguished Presidents' Club (DPC) for the past couple of years. Let's not break the cycle!

One of the 10 accomplishments needed to make the DPC each year is timely submission of club dues. Club members, each of you can help us accomplish this goal by paying your semi-annual dues no later than the second September meeting. Remember: our dues are now $34 every six months -- still an extremely reasonable amount. Contact the Club Treasurer if you have any questions.
