Public Relations VP gets Scooped by the VP of Education!

Charley Ashley says: "Being the Public Relations VP is sometimes very easy, given the super talent that we have in abundance. I was going to do an article on our club's 46th anniversary but our VP of Education's email says it all. … And all I can add is photos!!! Way to Go, Dana!"

If you weren’t there, you missed an awesome 46th anniversary! To use the words of Melissa Blagg, it was a jammed-packed meeting filled with 3 prepared speeches, one humorous speech contestant and three table topic contestants!

We partied with a purpose!! When we saw that the meeting was running overtime, the Toastmaster of the Day, Marcy Drafts, stated “Hey, it’s our birthday!” And celebrate we did. Members prepared delicious dishes. We should have given out prizes for the dishes as quite a few were homemade, such as fresh baked brownies, homemade lasagna, homemade baked beans, and BBQ mini sausages -- everything was yummy!

I want to acknowledge Julia Bland for presiding as Table Topics Contest Chair and thank everyone who attended and made the Anniversary and Club Contest event a super success!!

David Trevion

Special recognition goes to all contestants in our speech contest! And congratulations goes to our contest winners, who were:

Humorous Speech: David Crowder
Table Topics: Trevion Blanding

David went on to win 2nd place in the Area 23 Contest for Humorous Speeches, while Trevion went on to win 1st place in the Area Contest for Table Topics. Good work, Club 3002!

Dana One last thing, thank you all so much for the Gavel Plaque. In receiving it at the meeting, I was totally caught off guard and am still "somewhat" speechless. Thank U all again.

The 5 P's to Unlocking your Greatness

Inside of all of us we have greatness, In order for us to tap into our ultimate potential we must unlock the 5 p's to greatness within us all, they are……..

P P P P P
  1. PASSION: An ardent desire, any strong-felt emotion.
    • You must love what you do. (You are willing to do it for free even without pay)
    • It makes you happy
    • You feel good about it ... it energizes you.
  2. PERSISTENCE: To continue in spite of obstacles or objections.
    • Always move forward -- never give up!
    • Success must be continually practiced or it will take wings and fly away
    • Overcome obstacles (Obstacles are those frightful things we see when we fail to focus on our goals.
  3. POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE: Certain, sure, confident
    • According to leading sales trainer Brian Tracy, 85% of success is due to a positive mental attitude.
    • You must have positive expectations.
    • "You get not what you want, but what you expect in life."
    • Expect to succeed in everything you do.
  4. PEOPLE: "He who leadeth but has no followers is only taking a walk"
    • Bill Gates is a billionaire because he provides a great service to all the people of the world.
    • Always surround yourself with like minded people.(If you're the smartest person in your group, you need a new group)
    • The pursuit of your greatness should inspire other people to greatness.
  5. PURPOSE: Reason, object, design, aim or intention.
    • God gave us a purpose. It's our job to find it and pursue it.
    • Finding your purpose will simplify, focus, and motivate you.
    • Your purpose will give life meaning / Opportunities will show up.
    • Actively pursuing your purpose will extend your life.
    • "The man who has something to live for lives longer".

Who is a Public Relations Specialist?

Communicating The US Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook states that "Public Relations Specialists create favorable attitudes among various organizations, interest groups, and the public through effective communication." Effective communications is the bread and butter of Toastmasters.

Practicing Each and every Toastmaster automatically becomes a Public Relations Specialist as soon as we sign our application. Let me ask, "Who did you tell about your new club? Did you practice your speech for your spouse, for your family, for friends? Did you win a club contest? Did you invite a friend to attend a club meeting? Did you visit or help another club?" Each and every one is an example of public relations.

Socializing With a little bit of focus and some basic tools we can become highly effective. I would suggest just three items to start. One, get a Toastmasters business card. You can find a very nice MS Word business card template on TI's site for downloading. Make up a card with your name, phone number, and club info. The second is to wear your Toastmasters pin as often as possible. It is a great way to start a conversation. The third is to ask your friends and family if they would like to attend a Toastmasters meeting.

In our next newsletter, I will explain how to use TI's business card templates, online cheap sources for business cards, and free club advertisement items.

What people often remember isn't what you said, but how you said it!!
