You Should Have Been There!

More than 100 Toastmasters from all over District 40 gathered at Nationwide Insurance in Dublin.

The first hour was spent reviewing the organization of Toastmasters International from the club level through International Directors. This was given by Gary Mull, D40 District Governor. He also espoused the life-changing benefits of Toastmaster membership.

Mike Perez, ATM, D40 Lt. Governor of Marketing, conducted a wonderful panel discussion on growth and retention in the local clubs. The diverse panel all had some very simple and good ideas for membership development.

The third hour offered several break-out sessions for

  • Mentoring
  • How to Conduct a Speech Meet
  • Checking the PULSE of your club
In the 4th hour, there were break-out sessions for the various officers roles. I attended a session with other VP's of Membership. This group shared a treasure trove of ideas that are working in their clubs -- Valentine cards, personal compliments (oral and written). The other officers present reported that their sessions also provided a wealth of ideas to utilize in their roles.

WOW! You should have been there! But don't fret, there will be a make-up session on Monday, February 21, 2005, from 6 - 10 PM, at:

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
3200 Columbus St.
Grove City, OH 43123
Contact: Pat Claeys W: 849-1291 or 486-2172
Email: pclaeys@columbus.rr.com

Congratulations, Club 3002! We had 6 officers present and accounted for!

January Meetings Highlights

The Toastmaster of the January 11th meeting was Melissa Blagg. This turned out to be a great meeting, starting with Chuck Scott leading us in a Round-Robin Table Topic that challenged us all to keep an exciting story going.

The beginning of the story was about a man in the hospital who kept saying "I didn't mean to do it!" Believe me, that man had an exciting life before he ended up in the hospital! Catherine Hurston won the Table Topics Award for the evening.

There was only one speaker, Maria Scott, whose mission was to get us to "Stop the E-Mail Madness". She received a well thought-out evaluation from Curt Ralph.

President Vanessa Sutton was the Toastmaster for the January 25th meeting.

Anthony Jones did an excellent job in his first time as Table Topics Master. The theme for the table topics was Athletics with some interesting feedback on our athletic heroes and interests.

Keith Moore gave a very thought-provoking speech on the world moral and social values as it relates to our children.

Leo Jones gave an advanced speech on how to prevent identity theft. Chuck Scott also gave an advanced speech where his objective was to facilitate a group discussion. A panel made up of attendees at the meeting considered the facts on potential educational trips to Africa and determined which one was most feasible.

Awards for the evening went to Maria Scott for Table Topics, Chuck Scott for Best Speaker and Charley Ashley for Best Evaluator.

Evaluation Training

Our sincerest thanks go to Charley and Chuck for presenting club training on how to do effective evaluations. This meeting was held on Tuesday, January 18th, at the Whitehall Fire Department.

We can always count on Charley Ashley and Chuck Scott to have interesting presentations and this one was no exception. They made sure to use a variety of media and provided us with the opportunity to immediately utilize what we'd learn.

Portions of their presentation used overheads and video. They also provided a guest speaker, Derrick Lewis, who gave us an Ice Breaker speech. We used the round-robin approach to ensure that each person was able to apply sound evaluation techniques on the speech.

In addition, we evaluated the Evaluation Training -- an overall job well-done!
